詳細內容
The International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sport (ISHPES) was established in 1989 through the merger of two major international organizations: the International Committee for the History of Physical Education and Sport (ICOSH), founded in 1967 in Prague, and the International Association for the History of Physical Education and Sport (HISPA), founded in 1973 in Zurich. ISHPES is affiliated with the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE) and maintains close collaborative relationships with numerous international organizations in the fields of sport science and physical education.
The mission of ISHPES is to promote and advance historical research on physical education and sport worldwide, to facilitate communication and collaboration among scholars, and to foster international academic exchange. ISHPES organizes annual international congresses and symposia, and disseminates research findings through its official journals and bulletins. It has become one of the most influential and authoritative international academic platforms in the field of sport history. Its official journal, The International Journal of the History of Sport (IJHS), covers a broad range of topics, including physical culture, sport policy, sport institutions, gender and sport, nationalism and sport, and other interdisciplinary themes. The journal is widely recognized as one of the most representative and impactful international publications in the field and has long served as a primary outlet for ISHPES scholars to present their research.
Since 1999, scholars from Taiwan have actively participated in ISHPES conferences, with cumulative participation ranking first in Asia. This sustained engagement reflects the strong foundation of sport history research in Taiwan and the vitality of its emerging scholars, drawing considerable attention from the international academic community. Over the years, Taiwanese scholars in sport history have developed extensive academic exchanges and collaborative research with colleagues from Europe, North America, and other regions, producing substantial scholarly outcomes and earning high recognition internationally.
At the ISHPES Annual Congress held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 2023, participating scholars formally proposed, for the first time, that Taiwan host a future ISHPES conference. Following continued efforts and active advocacy, this proposal was reviewed and approved at the ISHPES Executive Committee Meeting during the 2024 Annual Congress in Curitiba, Brazil. The committee officially resolved that Taiwan will host the 2026 ISHPES International Congress.
This event will mark the second time in ISHPES history that Taiwan has hosted the congress, making it one of the few Asian countries to have undertaken this role. Notably, it will be the first instance in ISHPES history in which the congress is hosted twice in the same city, underscoring its exceptional historical and academic significance. This achievement not only highlights Taiwan’s prominent position within the international sport history community but also reinforces its role as a key academic hub in the Asia-Pacific region. Hosting this long-established, predominantly Euro-American-oriented congress is expected to further enhance Taiwan’s international academic visibility and influence.
