According to the UN report, in the next 50 years, the Asian region will be the oldest and most rapidly aging region in the world. Taiwan, on the other hand, has a declining birth rate and an increase in average life span. The aging index and the dependency index are among the highest in Asia. Successful ageing is a universal value, and it is also a goal that all governments strive to achieve. In addition to the successful aging, the quality of life of senior citizens can be improved, the pressure on caregivers can be reduced, and social costs and financial burdens can be effectively reduced. Healthy physical and mental conditions are two necessary basic conditions for successful aging. However, in the care of senior citizens, mental health is often neglected by health care professionals and the general public.

The Taiwan Geriatric Psychiatric Association was established in the Republic of China 94 (2005). It is dedicated to promoting the prevention and treatment of psychological disorders (such as dementia, geriatric depression, elderly suicide, etc.), mental health education, and professional training in the Taiwan region. Group organizations have good cooperation and actively participate in international cooperation. In the past decade, they have achieved outstanding results. The International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) was established in 1982 and is the international leader in mental health. IPA is headquartered in the United States and consists of five continents. Leading scholars in the field of dementia, depression, bipolar disorder and mental health in the elderly are members of the IPA; and elderly psychology including the Taiwan Geriatric Psychiatric Association. WHO is also mostly a corporate member. IPA has a leading position in the academic field. Many academic and empirical evidences commonly used in the current academic world come from its efforts, such as the development of guidelines for the treatment of psychotic and behavioral symptoms of dementia, the evaluation criteria and intervention criteria for the performance of the elderly, and depression in the elderly. Prevention and treatment of suicide with old age. Every year, IPA has regular worldwide and regional conferences, such as 2010 in San Diego, Spain, 2011 in The Hague, Netherlands, 2012 in Cairns, Australia, 2013 in Seoul, South Korea, 2014 in Beijing, and Brussels, Belgium. The conference has about 1,000 scholars from around the world attending the conference. It is an annual event for the elderly in psychiatric and psychological health education.

The Taiwan Geriatric Psychiatric Association was able to obtain the right to host the 2016 IPA Asia Conference. In addition to showing that Taiwan’s achievements in elderly psychiatric and mental health care have received international attention and recognition, it is Taiwan’s active participation in international organizations and vocalization. A great opportunity to exert real influence. Faced with the challenge of advanced age health care issues, it is possible to bring international standards, acquire new knowledge, and bring the latest knowledge and technology into the country. This will help the government to actively promote the development of the medical and health technology industry for the elderly, at the time of this industrial transformation. It will help Taiwan’s economic development. It is also possible to use this international conference to allow elites from all over the world to come to Taiwan.
