Main theme
Lessons learned and future challenges in site
characterization for construction and geo-environmental engineering
projects.
There are some proposed
sub-themes.
The Third James K. Mitchell
Lecture
The Mitchell Lecture was established by TC 16 of ISSMGE to honor
James K. Mitchell, Emeritus Professor of the University of
California-Berkeley and Emeritus Professor of Virginia Tech.
Professor Mitchell has made significant contributions in the area of
in-situ testing related to the development of testing methods, their
interpretation as well as advancements in environmental geotechnics,
ground improvement, and soil behavior. His book on the Fundamentals
of Soil Behavior was just re-issued in its 3rd edition by John Wiley
& Sons (2005). The 1st Mitchell Lecture was given by Professor
Hai-Sui Yu of the University of Nottingham during ISC¡¦2 (Porto) in
2004 and entitled: ¡§In-situ soil testing: from mechanics to
interpretation¡¨. The 2nd Mitchell Lecture titled ¡§Undisturbed sand
strength from seismic cone tests¡¨ was delivered by Professor Paul W.
Mayne of Georgia Institute of Technology at the GeoShanghai
International Conference in 2006. The ISC¡¦3 intends to continue this
tradition by hosting the 3rd Mitchell Lecture. The speaker and title
of the lecture will be announced later on the website.
Program and Conference Format
The conference will invite active and
prominent researchers and practitioners to deliver keynote speeches
in the proposed conference themes. A selection of the published
conference papers will be presented and a Reporter¡¦s summary report
will be delivered for each sub-theme and then followed by a
discussion session. Discussion topics will be drawn from special
format of poster sessions organized in the conference. During each
poster session, structured short oral presentations will be chaired
by a Reporter and prepared for discussion by an invited panel in the
discussion session immediately after the Reporter¡¦s summary report.
